Common Questions For BENLED

From: BENLED Lighting Service Dept. 2010-02-07

  • 01Why should I buy BENLED?

Partner with BENLED, a recognizable brand name with a stellar reputation for excellence in technology and design specializing in commercial LED lighting fields, including LED Downlight, LED Track Lighting, LED Tube Light, LED High Bay, LED Street Light, LED Strip Light.

Give us a chance and you won’t regret it!

  • 02Why should I consider buying LEDs?

BENLED Lighting LED fixtures offer 50,000 hours rated life and are backed by 3-5 years warranty.

This translates into energy savings, maintenance savings, and environmental sustainability. There is also the potential for greater optical control, dimming, instant on/off and reduced rate of lumen depreciation.

  • 03How do LEDs help the environment?

With BENLED Lighting LED products, there are no lamps to throw away and the entire fixture is recyclable. BENLED Lighting LED products are free of mercury and other toxic materials, a clear win for the environment (RoHS compliant).

LED luminaires from BENLED Lighting can save up to 75% energy over traditional HID systems.

  • 04How do you evaluate LED products?

Lumen output is only part of the story and can be misleading. To fully evaluate an LED product one needs to review the overall system efficiency, optical control, thermal management of the LEDs, and know at what point in time the fixture will reach 30 percent lumen depreciation.

  • 05Aren’t LED lights too expensive?

A main challenge with LED lighting is that it costs more upfront, but really, it can pay for itself over time with energy savings and lower maintenance costs. Keep this in mind when you initially invest in LED lights.

Whether retrofitting or remodeling, you’ll start saving money, through reduced energy consumption, the minute you flip the switch.

  • 06What is the prime cost for LED lighting system?

The first cost of the system should include all elements including installation and fixture cost. Please contact BENLED staff to compile these costs and calculate simple payback including environmental impact.

  • 07Are there any maintenance costs for LED lighting system over its life?

LED luminaires are intended to operate for extended periods without maintenance; however, should the luminaire require repair due to unusual events, both drivers and modules are easily accessible for replacement.

  • 08When can I expect to realize energy savings?

You will see an immediate savings upon installation.

  • 09Are the luminaires repairable and upgradable?

Part of BENLED LED Lighting fixtures utilizing modular design technology can easily repaired or upgraded by swapping LED modules.

  • 10How long do LEDs last?

BENLED LEDs last a long time. LED useful life is generally based on the number of operating hours until the LED is emitting 70% of its initial light output (known as L70).

LEDs are rated to at least 50,000 hours at L80 in a 25° C ambient environment, with some fixtures offering much longer lifespans and even higher ambient temperature environments.

While incandescent and fluorescent lighting will fail sooner when switched on and off often, LED lighting is unaffected by how often it is turned on and off.

  • 11What is the life rating of the driver? Does it match with published life times?

The lifetime of the driver is designed to match the life time of the luminaire.

  • 12What are the performance specifications for the driver?[Such as Efficiency, THD, Power Factor.]

All LED drivers used in BENLED Lighting outdoor products are top brand with highly efficient, have a minimum power factor of 0.9 and have THD less than 20%.

  • 13Is the product adequately protected against electrical transients? Does it survive a 10kV TIL test?

BENLED outdoor products include a circuit module that is designed to survive a 10kV surge test.

  • 14Do your products work in cold environments?

BENLED products absolutely work in cold environments including cold storage, freezer and cold food processing. While fluorescent and other technologies can be adversely affected by cold temperatures, this is not an issue with LED lights. LEDs love the cold.

  • 15What does ‘Lifetime 50,000 hours” mean?

Useful life has been defined as the number of hours an LED device can operate until it emits only a certain percentage of its original lumen output.

For general illumination applications, vision research suggests that 70 percent of original lumen output is the level where end users begin to notice a drop in light levels. This metric is indicated as L70.

Our LED lamps are tested for long-term lumen maintenance consistent with LM-80 methods to demonstrate L70 life after more than 6000 hours of testing and got the number 50,000 hours under normal operating conditions. Also the performance of our products is verified by accredited independent 3rd party laboratories. Please note, any initial condition or parameter change will affect the useful life of LEDs in different ways.

Remember, a 100,000-hour rating is not equivalent to lamp life rating. LED life is rated where it has reached 30 percent lumen depreciation. At 100,000 hours an LED would still be operating, but at a decreased lumen output.

  • 16What is the total initial lumen per watt rating of the luminaire?

BENLED products range in delivered lumens per watt from 90 to 110 LPW depending upon the configuration specified.

  • 17LED vs. HID Lighting Efficiency?

When you average delivered lumens over 60,000 hours, 200W LED outperforms a 400W MH lamp operated in a horizontal position, also, there are three relamps for MH lighting system over 60,000 hours. MH's lumen depreciation, as well as optical and ballast losses, quickly reduce output of the HID system.

Conversely, LED fixtures typically don't need relamping from zero to 60,000 hours.

  • 18What’s the difference between efficiency and efficacy?

Lighting fixture efficiency is the ratio of the total lumens exiting the fixture to the total lumens initially produced by the light source. For example, if a bare 100W incandescent lamp (light bulb) produces 1,000 lumens, and it is put into a lamp fixture that delivers 700 lumens, this would be an example of a 70% efficient fixture.

Efficacy is a term normally used in cases where the input and output units differ. In lighting, we are concerned with the amount of light (in lumens) produced by a certain amount of electricity (in watts). Efficacy = Lumens per Watt.

  • 19Do you have IES files for your products?

IES files of our products can be sent by our overseas sales.

  • 20How was photometry performed?

BENLED Lighting’s photometric parameters tested by accredited machines.

  • 21In a sample installation do you see a bright spots or an even distribution?

BENLED optics provides industry leading performance in distribution uniformity and light control.

  • 22What is the luminaire warranty?

BENLED Lighting provides a 3-5 years limited warranty on its major product range.

[See the BENLED Lighting Warranty Policy for details].

  • 23What items are covered?

The LED Lighting warranty covers fixture mechanicals, electrical components, drivers and paint.

  • 24Who manages and responds to warranty issues?

All warranty related issues should be directed to BENLED Lighting. The end user need not engage any third parties.

  • 25Is the product reliable for operation?

Our LED lighting products have strict quality control system and it's for sure reliable.

  • 26What is major motion?

Major motion is defined as movement of a person walking into or through an area. Typical examples are a person walking into a room or through an open area. Major motion may be required to turn on the lights, but transitions to minor motion once the occupant is in the room.

  • 27What is minor motion?

Minor motion is defined as movement of a person sitting at a desk reaching for a telephone, turning the pages of a book, opening a file cabinet, or picking up a cup of coffee.

  • 28What is the difference between occupancy and vacancy sensing?

An occupancy sensor turn lights ON automatically upon the detection of motion then turns the lights OFF automatically soon after an area is vacated. A vacancy sensor requires manual activation of the lighting by the occupant then turns the lights OFF automatically soon after an area is vacated.

  • 29Where can I find information about light rebates?

Light lighting product rebates are only offered through local stores. To find out if any lighting product rebates are currently available, please check with light retailers in your area.
